DAY 1 — ARRIVAL, CHECK-IN & EXPEDITION BRIEFING

Arrive and check in to your accommodation before meeting the Black Mountaineering team for the official welcome and safety briefing. We’ll introduce the challenge ahead, review the route, expected winter conditions, gear requirements and the plan for the following morning.

This is also an opportunity to meet your fellow team members, ask any final questions and make sure everyone is fully prepared for the challenge ahead.

DAY 2 — WINTER CHALLENGE

Early morning team assembly before setting out on the Challenge.

A full winter mountain journey through one of Ireland’s most spectacular coastal landscapes, with the Atlantic Ocean providing a dramatic backdrop throughout the challenge.

Following completion, we return to freshen up before coming together for our Celebration Dinner & Dancing — a chance to celebrate the achievement, share stories from the mountain and finish the adventure together.

Trip info

  • You’re in great company. Around 80% of our clients are solo hikers, making it one of the easiest ways to meet like-minded people who share a passion for adventure..

  • Irish winter mountain conditions can be cold, wet and demanding. Expect lower temperatures, strong winds, rain and rapidly changing weather, with conditions often becoming significantly colder at higher elevations.

Participants should arrive properly equipped for a full winter mountain day. A complete seasonal clothing and equipment list will be provided in your Expedition Information Pack before the event.

  • Choose the group that best reflects your current fitness, experience and preferred pace — not simply the group you would like to finish in.

Standard — Best for experienced recreational hikers who are comfortable with a full mountain day but prefer a steady, supportive pace.

Intermediate — For regular mountain hikers with good fitness who are comfortable maintaining a consistent pace over longer distances and more demanding terrain.

Advanced — For strong, experienced hikers with a high level of mountain fitness who are comfortable with long winter days, sustained climbs and a faster overall pace.

Advanced Plus — Our highest level, designed for very fit and experienced mountain hikers capable of maintaining a strong pace over significant distance, ascent and challenging terrain.

There is no advantage in choosing a group above your current ability. The objective is to have a challenging but enjoyable day while keeping the entire team moving safely and effectively.

Unsure? Contact us before booking and we’ll help you choose the most appropriate group.

Requirements are:

  • Previous summer hillwalking experience in mountainous terrain
  • A good level of mountain fitness, capable of spending a full day in the Irish mountains
  • Comfortable walking on steep, rough and uneven terrain
  • Willingness to operate in cold, wet, and potentially challenging winter weather
  • Appropriate winter clothing and personal equipment as detailed in your course kit list
  • Participants must be physically capable of carrying their own day pack and equipment
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn and work as part of a group
