Day 1

Fly into Marrakech Airport from your chosen departure point. There is no fixed itinerary today, so you may arrive at any time, day or night.

On arrival, you will be welcomed by our guide team and transferred by Black Mountaineering private transport to your traditional riad accommodation in Marrakech.

After a restful night, breakfast will be served at 8:00 am with the guide team. At 9:00 am, you will depart Marrakech and begin your journey towards the spectacular High Atlas Mountains.

Day 2

After breakfast at 8:00 am, you’ll depart your riad at 9:00 am with our guide team for the scenic drive to the mountain village of Imlil (1,740m), where your trek begins.

Following the beautiful Mizane Valley, you’ll pass through the traditional Berber village of Aremd (1,900m) and visit the sacred shrine of Sidi Chamarouch before continuing your ascent to the Toubkal Refuge (3,200m), your mountain home for the night. Nestled beneath the towering slopes of Jebel Toubkal, the refuge offers spectacular alpine scenery and marks the perfect base for your summit attempt.

Day 3

Today is summit day. After breakfast at 1:00 am, you’ll set off under headtorch at 2:00 am for the ascent of Jebel Toubkal (4,167m), North Africa’s highest mountain.

Following the South Cirque, you’ll steadily climb through alpine terrain, reaching the summit in approximately 3–4 hours. As the sun rises, take in breathtaking panoramic views stretching across the High Atlas Mountains and, on a clear day, as far as the edge of the Sahara Desert.

After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend to the Toubkal Refuge for a well-earned breakfast and time to relax before continuing down the valley to the welcoming Berber village of Aremd (1,900m), where you’ll spend the night. The day is expected to take 10–11 hours in total.

This evening, enjoy a traditional Moroccan celebration with authentic local cuisine, music, and dancing—a memorable way to mark your successful summit of North Africa’s highest peak.

Day 4

After a traditional Berber breakfast, you’ll enjoy a guided walk through the mountain village of Aremd, followed by a refreshing swim at one of the valley’s hidden waterfalls.

A short 2 km trek then brings you back to Imlil, where our private transfer awaits for the scenic 1 hour 30 minute drive to Marrakech. After checking into your riad, enjoy a hot shower and some free time to explore the vibrant, spice-scented souks and colourful streets of the city.

That evening, we’ll come together for a special celebration dinner featuring traditional Moroccan cuisine, music, and dancing, where you’ll also receive your official Black Mountaineering Summit Certificate to mark your successful ascent of Jebel Toubkal.

Day 5

Enjoy a relaxed final morning in Marrakech before your journey home. You may choose to wander through the city’s vibrant souks, experience a traditional Moroccan Hammam, or join an unforgettable sunrise hot air balloon flight over the Atlas Mountains.

The optional hot air balloon experience includes a 5:30 am pick-up, a spectacular sunrise flight, and a lavish traditional Moroccan breakfast before returning to your hotel at approximately 11:00 am. (Optional extra: €175 per person.)

At the appropriate time, you’ll be collected by our Black Mountaineering private expedition transport and transferred to Marrakech Airport for your onward flight home.

Trip info

  • We recommend that each participant contributes a €50 gratuity to Hassan, our Lead Guide, at the end of the expedition. Hassan will distribute the tips fairly among the entire mountain team, including the guides, cooks, and muleteers who work together to make your expedition a success.

While gratuities are always discretionary, they are greatly appreciated and form an important part of supporting the local team and their families.

  • Absolutely. You can book a private guided city tour with Hassan, who will introduce you to a side of Marrakech that few visitors ever experience. From hidden streets and bustling local markets to authentic cafés and cultural landmarks, it’s the perfect way to discover the real heart of the city.

The cost is €100 per group (not per person) and is payable directly to Hassan at the end of your expedition.

  • Jebel Toubkal is a non-technical mountain, so no previous climbing or mountaineering experience is required. However, you should have a good level of general fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours over consecutive days on mountain terrain.

Our 12-week training programme is designed to prepare you for the expedition, and our experienced guide team will support you every step of the way, ensuring you enjoy a safe, rewarding, and achievable journey to the summit.

  • You’re in great company. Around 80% of our clients join this expedition as solo travellers, making it one of the easiest ways to meet like-minded people who share a passion for adventure.

Our groups are intentionally kept small, typically 6–10 participants, creating a friendly, supportive atmosphere. The average age ranges from 25 to 65, although this can vary from trip to trip. By the end of the expedition, it’s not uncommon for strangers to leave as lifelong friends.

  • April to September offers the best conditions for climbing Jebel Toubkal, with warm days in Marrakech and generally stable weather in the High Atlas Mountains.

While daytime temperatures on the mountain are often pleasant, night-time and early morning summit temperatures can still fall below freezing, particularly before sunrise. Layering is essential, and our equipment guide will ensure you have everything you need to stay warm and comfortable throughout the expedition.

  • Yes, of course! If you would like us to extend your stay either side then just ask.
If you choose to arrive early or depart later than the stated itinerary then there is an additional cost of €70 for a private transfer.

  • If you have dietary requirements and or food allergies, please let us know prior to departure. Moroccan food is excellent though not particularly varied. Breakfasts usually consist of bread and ham with coffee or tea. Meals eaten out are reasonably priced – kebab and bread cost only about MAD 70. In main towns, it is possible to find very good French and Moroccan restaurants where a meal and French wine are very reasonably priced from MAD 220 upwards. Generally, dinner is likely to cost between MAD 80-120 depending on what you drink. Bottled drinks are available at very reasonable prices, but alcohol is not widely available in Morocco due for cultural and religious reasons. But still, in some hotels and restaurants, you will be able to purchase beer, wine and spirits, but you will pay imported prices. Please be aware of local laws, believes and traditions, and be very sensitive and respectful while consuming alcohol.

Vegetarians can be catered for but there is a fairly limited choice. This is particularly the case in rural parts of this trip.
Vegans and those on gluten-free diets may find this region very challenging and may need to supplement meals with their own supplies.

  • You can leave any luggage not needed at the hotel in Marrakech.

To enjoy your Mt Toubkal Expedition, you should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours on mountain terrain. While the climb is physically demanding, it is non-technical and no previous mountaineering experience is required, making it an achievable challenge for anyone who prepares well.

Upon booking, you’ll receive our comprehensive Expedition Information Pack, which includes a specially designed 12-week training programme to help you prepare physically and mentally for your Mount Toubkal Expedition.
