The National Hiking Series is more than just a trek—it’s an adventure for the soul, designed to inspire weekend warriors to conquer Ireland’s seven most iconic mountain ranges. The Ireland 7 Summits Challenge®, held annually from March to September, invites hikers of all levels to embrace the wild beauty of Ireland, build lifelong friendships, and create unforgettable memories. 

Whether you’re a first-time hiker or a seasoned adventurer, whether you come solo or with a group, this is your chance to connect with nature, push your limits, and maybe even raise funds for a cause close to your heart. These hikes are more than a challenge—they’re a celebration of camaraderie, exploration, and purpose.

How to take part


Book a single climb or unlock the 7’s Discount to conquer all seven summits within a single year. Need flexibility? You can carry forward up to two hikes, provided you give at least four weeks’ notice. (Without notice, your spot will be forfeited.) Don’t miss your chance to complete this epic challenge—plan ahead and make every climb count!

Black Mountaineering is delighted to announce that as part of our commitment to the outdoor educational programme we will be running accredited Mountaineering Ireland Mountains Skills 1 & 2 courses during the our ongoing hiking series with six places available for each.

Mountain Skills courses are discounted for our members.

Course covers: 

  • Practical navigation in the mountains Planning a route using maps and compass
  • Clothing and equipment overview and advice
  • Introduction to different map scales
  • How to set the map
  • How to interpret contours
  • How to interpret key symbols ie how to find a footpath, fence, stream etc
  • How to plan and follow a route using paths and other key features
  • How to plan and follow a route off the path
  • How to estimate distance using pacing and timing
  • How to navigate in poor or limited visibility
  • How to re-orientate yourself if you do get lost
  • Movement over steep ground
  • Mountain weather – how the weather affects our route planning and choice during the day
  • Emergency procedures in case of an incident
  • Choice and use of equipment including a simple demonstration/introduction of use of GPS units, their advantages and limitations (You do not require a GPS unit for this course)
  • Environmental knowledge and considerations and the principles of Leave No Trace

The Code of Practice sets out guidelines to ensure that the potential negative effects of the Ireland 7 summit Challenge are minimised.

Specific National 7 Summit Challenge Guidelines

  • We will highly respect everyone’s background gender and ethnicity and everyone will be treated equally.
  • We uphold a zero-tolerance policy towards violence, harassment
  • (physical, verbal, or sexual), and disrespect towards fellow hikers, team members, or local communities.
  • There will be a capped number of hikers per category:
    -Standard route
    -Intermediate route
    -Advanced route
  • You maybe advised on your group ability, take no offence its for your own safety and enjoyment.
  • We implement a strict 7 leave no trace programme. Information will be provided to participants on the environmental and land management sensitivities of the areas they will be visiting. We will give participants guidance on how to mitigate their impact as much as possible.
  • Individual mountain behaviour and site-specific codes of conduct will be followed.
  • We will always minimise our disturbance and adverse impact on locals and seasonal farmers, giving consideration to the timing of the event.
  • In camp settlement areas, arrival and departure will be agreed upon in advance.
  • Strict access and parking locations will be identified, avoiding congestion and the blocking of narrow roads.
  • In accordance with Irish Mountaineering guidelines, no dogs are allowed on any of our Ireland 7 Summits hikes.

  • Walking boots (with ankle support, not trail shoes or trainers)
  • Head Torch (as backup)
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Hiking socks (wearing a single pair recommended, rather than using a liner sock)
  • Backpack (approx. 20 litre size)
  • Water container (bottle or Camelpak-style, 1-2 litres)
  • Food & hill snacks (pasta, cereal bars, dried fruit, nuts)
  • Gloves
  • Hat (covering ears)
