The Black Mountaineering Ethical Expedition Standard

At Black Mountaineering, our expeditions are built on more than reaching summits. We believe that responsible mountaineering must respect the mountains, the environment, the local communities, and the people who make expeditions possible.

The Black Mountaineering Ethical Expedition Standard sets out the principles that guide every expedition we run anywhere in the world.

1. Respect for Local People

Our expeditions depend on the expertise, strength, and dedication of local guides, porters, and mountain teams. These individuals are the backbone of successful expeditions.

Black Mountaineering is committed to ensuring that all local staff are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

This includes:

• Fair wages that meet or exceed local industry standards
• Safe working conditions
• Proper food, shelter, and equipment
• Medical support when required
• Opportunities for professional development

We believe that when local teams are supported and respected, expeditions become stronger, safer, and more meaningful.

2. Porter Welfare

Porter welfare is a core part of the Black Mountaineering philosophy.

Unfortunately, in some parts of the world, porters are still underpaid, overloaded, and poorly equipped. Black Mountaineering actively works to ensure this never happens on our expeditions.

Our porter welfare commitments include:

• Strict load limits (generally a maximum of 15kg per porter)
• Proper clothing and protective equipment
• Adequate food and accommodation
• Medical care and support if injured or ill
• Fair wages and transparent employment practices

Porters are not simply labourers — they are valued members of the expedition team.

3. The Porter-to-Guide Development Programme

Black Mountaineering believes in creating real opportunity.

Through the Black Mountaineering Porter-to-Guide College Programme, we provide porters with the opportunity to progress into professional guiding careers.

This programme offers:

• Paid access to guide training and education
• Support to attend professional guide colleges
• Practical experience on expeditions
• Mentorship from experienced expedition leaders

By supporting education and professional development, porters can progress into guiding roles and build long-term careers in the mountain industry.

This programme helps create life-changing opportunities, improving the future prospects of individuals and their families while strengthening the quality and safety of our expedition teams.

4. Environmental Responsibility

Mountains are fragile environments that require careful protection.

Black Mountaineering follows internationally recognised environmental principles and responsible trekking practices.

Our expeditions commit to:

• Minimising environmental impact
• Following Leave No Trace principles
• Removing expedition waste wherever possible
• Respecting local wildlife and ecosystems
• Supporting conservation efforts in mountain regions

We believe that mountaineering should leave no lasting damage to the places we explore.

5. Safety First

Safety is the foundation of every expedition.

Black Mountaineering expeditions are led by experienced mountain professionals and supported by well-trained local teams.

Our safety standards include:

• Careful expedition planning and risk management
• Experienced guides and leadership teams
• First aid training and medical support
• Emergency evacuation planning
• Continuous monitoring of weather and conditions

Every expedition is designed to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of all participants and staff.

6. Supporting Local Communities

Responsible expeditions should benefit the communities that host them.

Black Mountaineering works to ensure that our expeditions contribute positively to local economies and communities.

This includes:

• Employing local guides and porters
• Supporting local accommodation and suppliers
• Investing in education and training opportunities
• Promoting sustainable tourism practices

Our goal is to ensure that every expedition contributes to long-term positive impact in the regions where we operate.

Our Philosophy

Black Mountaineering believes that mountaineering is about far more than reaching a summit.
It is about having the Precision to plan and execute every detail safely, the Professionalism to lead and support others with integrity, and the Passion to embrace the mountains, the people, and the journey itself.

“Mountaineering is built on teamwork and trust. The guides, porters, and local teams who support expeditions deserve respect, fair treatment, and safe conditions. When we climb, we climb together — and everyone’s welfare matters.”

Jason Black

When you climb with Black Mountaineering, you are not only taking part in an expedition – you are supporting an approach to mountaineering that values people, environment, and community as much as the summit itself.
